We are committed to providing the best nutrition for our horses. Their balanced diet includes oats, muesli and nuts, served three times daily to keep them energised. Treats like mints and apples are always a welcome addition!
To support their health, we provide horse lick supplements for essential minerals and electrolytes, along with Epsom salts and powders to promote joint health.
Each horse has access to fresh water at every stop, ensuring their comfort and well-being throughout the day
We prioritise the health and happiness of our horses, offering comprehensive care to keep them comfortable and ready for work:
Veterinary Care: Regular health check-ups by our resident vet, Dr. Shane Myers, include worming, copper dosing and routine assessments.
Blacksmith Visits: Monthly shoeing keeps their hooves in perfect condition for the road.
Dental Care: Checkups and routine management are carried out every 6-12 months on site. Regular dental care is essential for the comfort and longevity of the horse.
Haircuts: Regular grooming and trimming are tailored to the seasons. In summer, manes are cut short to keep the horses cool, while in winter, fuller coats provide warmth and protection.
Therapy & Rest: Weekly massages, in a custom-designed pen made with sand and carpet fibre, help our horses relax and recover.
Our horses follow a carefully managed rotation, working two days on and enjoying two days off. This schedule ensures they have ample time for rest, recovery and variety in their daily lives.
On workdays, they start each morning with grooming and their evenings conclude with a refreshing wash to keep their coats healthy and gleaming. Ice packs are applied to their muscles when needed, aiding recovery and ensuring they remain comfortable and well-cared-for.
During colder months, they are kept snug with premium Kensey blankets and sleep on memory-foam rubber mats for added warmth and relaxation.
On their days off, the horses are taken to our spacious farmlands outside Killarney, where they can roam freely, socialise with other horses and enjoy the freedom of open pastures. These pastures are also home to our younger horses who are not yet ready for work as well as retired horses, fostering a well blended mix of all ages.
Each horse is paired with their own dedicated Jarvey, fostering a strong and lasting relationship. This bond is built on trust, care and understanding, ensuring smooth and safe journeys, even in challenging conditions like traffic or busy main roads.
Our Jarveys are not just tour guides; they are skilled equestrians with extensive experience, often stemming from years spent in horse riding clubs or other equine pursuits. They are responsible for the daily care of their horses, from feeding and grooming to ensuring their harness fits perfectly.
This deep connection is vital for creating a harmonious partnership, allowing the horse to feel secure and confident in any situation.
