Your tour begins with an unforgettable journey on a traditional Jaunting Car from the historic Great Southern Hotel in Killarney. Ride through the bustling outskirts of Killarney Town and soak up its vibrant atmosphere before making your way down the leafy green avenues of Muckross Road.
Pass by notable landmarks such as the Golden Gates of Killarney House and the tranquil Flesk River, setting the stage for your journey into nature. Next, enter the mesmerizing woodlands of the Killarney National Park , opening up into breathtaking vistas of the spectacular Lakes of Killarney.
Continue to the focal point of your tour, the mystical ruins of Muckross Abbey, a 15th century Franciscan Friary, nestled within the National Park while your Jarvey Guide regales you with tales and legends of its haunting past. Disembark to explore its rich history and architectural beauty. Wander through the preserved remains, including the ground floor and upper level of its vaulted cloisters. Marvel at the peaceful and quiet nature of its grounds, taking in the most striking feature: an ancient Yew Tree at its centre, thought to be the oldest of its species in Ireland and a remarkable sight.
Another highlight is the Abbey Chancel, with its three mullioned windows still intact, providing a glimpse into its storied past. Take a stroll through the Abbey’s picturesque surroundings including its ancient graveyard, which holds the remains of some of Kerry’s most famous chieftains and poets, adding to the site’s rich heritage.
Once you’ve finished exploring the Abbey, climb back onto your Jaunting Car and enjoy a scenic loop trail back to Killarney Town.
